Our music school offers a teaching experience like no other.

JAMS was created by teachers, for teachers. We know firsthand how exploitative and frustrating it is to work for traditional music schools. That's why we operate under the co-operative model, welcoming teachers into a fair work environment where they co-own the business right from the beginning of their time with us. We value community over profit, allowing our teachers to deliver the best music education possible to our students, all while earning an equitable wage.

Other music schools provide little to no information for teachers about what to expect when working at their school. This page is dedicated to listing out all of that information so you know exactly what you're walking into once you apply to work here. Equitable Wages

When you teach through JAMS, you get to set your own rates, within a fair and equitable range. For example, for 60-minute lessons, you will choose a rate between $44-$56. This is much higher than the majority of independent music schools across Canada.

Our goal is not to have one single person profit ten times more than anyone else working in the organization. JAMS will retain 20% of the fee paid by students to use for operating costs and growing the financial aid program. Most schools take at least 30%, and sometimes upwards of 50%, of the student's fee, leaving the teacher with peanuts.

JAMS is a worker co-operative, meaning we all collectively own the business as members and teachers. When you are hired, you automatically become a member and co-owner. This means you actually have a say in the business and where our money goes!

We currently have a four-person executive committee which meets once a week to discuss and decide on day-to-day management of the company. However, all members use our
Discord server to receive updates, participate in social media ideas, and discuss all things JAMS.

Transparent and Accessible Frameworks

Two of our core values at JAMS are transparency and accessibility, something you rarely get at other music schools. Below, you'll find all of the documents included in our Welcome Package that we send newly hired teachers. There will be no surprises from the time you apply to the time you teach your first student.

When you join JAMS, you will have access to all goings-on in the company, save the weekly executive meeting (but the minutes of these meetings will be made available on Discord). As we continue to grow, we hope to offer more workshops and resources for teachers (and students), paid for by JAMS, in order to
expand our collective knowledge.

We recognize that as an independent contractor, JAMS is here to help YOU teach in an equitable way. We are constantly rethinking and reimagining the studio-teacher relationship and how we can better serve ourselves as teachers, as well as our valued students. You get to tell
us when you are available to teach and what your holiday dates will be each calendar year. You have the freedom to teach online in your home or studio. We will support you in any way we can.

[Please note that as part of our financial aid and accessibility mandates, you must be willing to take on a minimum of
one sliding-scale student (should they require such financial aid). In this case, the student pays $20 for a 60-minute lesson, and JAMS does not take any of that money. 100% of it goes to you, the teacher.]

Our application form is always open, though we hire based on instrument need and student demand, among other things. Here is what you can expect if we are interested in bringing you on board:

Once you have filled out the application form, we will review your submission as soon as possible. We will then contact you to schedule an interview via Zoom. The interview will give us a chance to get to know you better and we may ask you to provide a 5-minute teaching demo (instructions will be provided by email).

After the hiring committee discusses your interview, you will be sent a confirmation email containing the Welcome Package below. We will ask you to read and sign the documents and then voilà! You will be a teacher and co-owner (member) of the Just and Accessible Music School!
